The Wivenhoe Canoe and Kayak Club was formed in 2013 by a group of Wivenhoe locals who enjoyed paddling and wanted better access to the River Colne.

River Access

Access to the River Colne in Wivenhoe has not always been easy. Most of the river bank through the town is privately owned, so options for legally launching and recovering are limited.

When the club was formed in 2013 we set out together to find a better way to get onto the water. After some negotiations we secured shared access via Wivenhoe Sailing Club's Old Hard (on the quay near the Rose and Crown pub) that is owned by Colchester Borough Council who lease it to the sailing club.

We have also been involved with lobbying Wivenhoe Town Council to provide freely available public access to the river. We are pleased that the council found the budget to install a new public pontoon to provide river access. The new pontoon is now open, though at the moment kayakers are still getting to grips with how to use it.

British Canoing affiliation

The club is affiliated with British Canoeing, which is the lead canoe and kayak organisation in the UK. Being affiliated with the British Canoeing provides the club with liability insurance and other benefits.

Paddling and social events

We regularly get out and paddle together and we have other social events.
